The Prevalence of thyroid Functional Disorders And Autoimmune Diseases in MS Patients treated with Interferon Beta

The incidence of thyroid functional disorders and
autoimmune diseases in multiple sclerosis(MS)
patients who received interferon have been
reported in some studies. The mechanism by
which interferon therapy leads to thyroid disease is
unknown however, the result of various studies
suggest interactions of the immune system with
the direct toxic effects of interferons on thyroid
cells.   Co-incidence of multiple sclerosis with
systemic and specific autoimmune disorders have
been reported frequently and specific autoantibodies
have been recognized in MS patient. This study
was conducted with the aim of considering the
prevalence of thyroid functional disorders and
autoimmune diseases in MS patients being treated
with interferon beta for less than 5 years.
